WA Rejects Army Corps’ Water Quality Attainment Plan

June 28, 2024

The state of Washington’s Department of Ecology rejected the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ proposed Water Quality Attainment Plan for failing to adequately address hot water pollution on the Lower Snake River. The high water temperatures, which are caused by slow moving water behind the four Lower Snake dams, are lethal to migrating salmon and steelhead. Following our 2018 9th Circuit victory, the Army Corps received a federal court order to address water temperature pollution, but has so far failed to meet minimum safety standards for migrating fish populations. The agency now has until September 1, 2024 to revise its plan.
